Emperor Francis Joseph I is about to arrive in Prague, and among those who came to Stromovka to welcome him is Veronika Pavlitová. She wants to submit a request for clemency for her imprisoned father to the emperor, because she is barely able to support herself and her siblings on the meager salary of a seamstress. By chance, the girl meets Božena Němcová, whom she admires immensely. She becomes her friend and confidant for a while. However, police director Paümann, who has been following Božena Němcová for a long time, takes advantage of the naivety of the young girl. Veronika, in her simple-mindedness, tells him many things. Only later will she understand how she was abused.

The story of Veronica continues. Having lost her beloved husband, the heroine remains defenseless against the criminals who hunted for her father's invaluable scientific discovery. The only way to save her life is to convey the information to her father's student who lives in Poland. Hiding from the bandits Veronica goes to Krakow in a truck which carries furniture across the border. However the fatal combination of circumstances destroys all her plans: Veronica is forced to flee before reaching the destination, but the worst thing is that someone steals her father's notebook, which she was carrying to Poland.

Everything changes dramatically for teen-aged Veronica, when a rich businessman Andrey Kostrov comes to her town. Andrey is a former student of her father, prominent scientist Lev Serov. He has grandiose plans: he wants to implement the professor's genius scientific developments into production; it should bring his business to a fundamentally new level, but also might become a real breakthrough in science and change the course of history. Serov starts working and makes final calculations to complete the main project of his life, but all of sudden gets to the hospital with a heart attack. To the doctors' surprise, his condition gets worse sharply and soon he dies, having asked Andrey to look after his underage daughter. Veronica is shocked by the death of her father, but flatly refuses to leave for Moscow with a man she doesn't know at all. However soon she realizes that she is in serious trouble.
